requires 63. The top 8 authors (approximately 1 percent) have 148 or more citations

each.

Now that publication and citation counts have been reported at the sample level, we

turn to a presentation of rankings of the top 50 authors based on metrics presented for

the sample level, and some additional metrics, such as citations appearing in insurance

and noninsurance journals.

Table 4 reports the top 50 authors based on the number of JRI articles in the 1989–

2010 period, both unadjusted (Panel A) and adjusted (Panel B) for coauthorship. J.

David Cummins and Mark Browne tie for first place with 14 publications before an

adjustment for coauthorship; Scott Harrington holds first place once adjustment is made

for coauthorship. As an indication of how sensitive rankings are to the coauthorship

adjustment, four authors that are not in the top 10 before the coauthorship adjustment

move into the top 10 after the adjustment, including Richard Butler, Moshe Milevsky,

Harris Schlesinger, and Steven Pottier.

Table 5 presents the top 50 authors ranked according to total citations (Panel

A), citations in insurance journals (Panel B), and citations in noninsurance jour-

nals (Panel C). J. David Cummins ranks number one for total citations and in-

surance citations, and fourth for noninsurance citations. Only four authors are in

the top 10 for both insurance citations and noninsurance citations, namely, David

Blake, Mark Browne, J. David Cummins, and David Sommer; 24 of the top 50

in both groups are the same. Publication counts and total citations are positively
